What a treasury manager does

A treasury manager looks after a company's money as money: the cash in many bank accounts and currencies, the forecast of what comes in and goes out, the credit lines and loans, and the risks from currencies, interest rates and the banks themselves. The daily work is cash positions, payments and funding; the monthly work is forecasts, reports and hedges; the yearly work is financing, bank fees and the treasury policy.

Treasury sits in the finance department next to accounting and controlling. The financial analyst plans the results; treasury plans the cash that pays for them. The controller explains the figures; treasury turns them into a cash forecast and a funding plan. In a large group, the treasury often runs like an in-house bank for its subsidiaries. The steps from treasury analyst to group treasurer are in the career paths of this role.

The skills the ads ask for

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €39,839 to €60,785 a year
  • Mid-level: €57,746 to €65,585 a year
  • Senior: €73,900 to €97,100 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

Entry level runs from the low end of Indeed's treasury analyst range to its average, from 284 salaries; mid-level from gehalt.de's middle figure for treasury managers to its upper quarter; senior is StepStone's range for a head of treasury, an estimate that does not say how many salaries it rests on, so it is the least firm of the three. Indeed gives treasury manager ads an average of about €64,100.

Sources: Indeed: treasury analyst (Oct 2026), gehalt.de: Treasury-Manager (2026), StepStone: head of treasury (2026), Indeed: treasury manager (Oct 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and banking: German ads say Treasury Manager, Treasurer, Cash Manager or Liquiditätsmanager, and for the daily cash work Finanzdisponent. Payments to German banks often run through EBICS, a bank channel used in Germany and some neighbouring countries, next to SWIFT for international banks. The VDT, the German association of treasurers, offers training and events.

Language: most German ads ask for GermanAsked for in most ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where banks and subsidiaries work in German. next to EnglishThe language of banks, group treasury and most financing documents., because banks, subsidiaries and the finance department often work in German.

The profession: in the US, the AFP, the US Association for Financial Professionals, runs the CTP certificate and publishes surveys on treasury practice. US companies that use derivatives report them under the US rules for swaps, and hedge accounting follows US GAAP.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment; contract roles are common for treasury system projects.

  • Mid-level: CHF 89,460 to CHF 120,537 a year

Total pay: Payscale gives Swiss treasury managers bonuses of about CHF 5,000 to CHF 22,000 a year, from few salaries on an older page.

The Swiss figures are thin. Entry level runs from the lower tenth of Payscale's range to the low end of Lohncheck's; mid-level from there to Payscale's average, which rests on few salaries and was last updated in 2024; senior from that average to the top of Lohncheck's range, which counts thirteen monthly salaries. No Swiss source gives figures for treasury analysts on their own.

Sources: Lohncheck (Q1 2026), Payscale (Jan 2024).

The Swiss franc: many Swiss companies earn in euros or dollars and pay costs in Swiss francs, so currency risk is a large part of treasury in Switzerland. Interest rates follow the SNB, the Swiss National Bank, whose rates have at times been below zero.

India

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: ₹5.4 lakh to ₹8.44 lakh a year
  • Mid-level: ₹8.44 lakh to ₹12.32 lakh a year

Sources: Payscale (Jun 2025), Indeed (Jul 2024).

Currency rules: in India, foreign exchange deals, foreign borrowing and many cross-border payments fall under FEMA, India's Foreign Exchange Management Act, run by the RBI, India's central bank, so treasurers there work closely with their banks on each step.

Systems, rules and certificates

Treasury management systems hold bank accounts, cash positions, deals, loans and payments in one place. Kyriba, SAP, FIS, ION and Coupa are among the names in ads, side by side; companies choose by their ledger, their size and how many banks and countries they work with, and smaller ones still work in spreadsheets. Payments reach the banks through SWIFT, the international banking network, and in Germany and some neighbouring countries also through EBICS.

Rules touch treasury at several points: in the EU, EMIR asks companies to report their derivative deals, and SEPA sets common rules for euro payments; India's FEMA governs foreign exchange; accounting standards decide when hedge accounting is allowed. What is said here about them is a plain summary and not legal or regulatory advice. The company's lawyers, auditors and banks help decide what applies.

Certificates appear in some ads and are named here side by side: the CTP of the US Association for Financial Professionals, the AFP, and the qualifications of the ACT, the UK's Association of Corporate Treasurers. Many treasurers have neither; ads ask most for cash, banks and hedges you handled.

Your CV for a treasury manager job

A treasury CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a head of treasury or CFO who wants to know how much cash, how many banks and currencies, and which risks you handled. Give both: the keywords and the proof.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the work as the ad does: "cash management", "liquidity planning", "cash pooling", "FX hedging", "bank relationship management", "treasury management system". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say how big and wide: the number of banks, accounts, currencies and countries, and the kind of financing you worked on.
  • Write a certificate you are still studying for as "in progress" with the planned date, next to the work it supports.
  • Name the systems you used or introduced, such as a treasury system or a payment platform.

Prove each skill

A treasury line proves itself with money that is visible: a forecast that became reliable, cash freed, fees cut, a risk hedged, a refinancing closed on time.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Cash forecastingKnow where the group's cash is each day, forecast it, move it to where it is needed and keep it safe.Responsible for the cash forecast.Rebuilt the thirteen-week cash forecast with the business units; the forecast error halved within two quarters.
Cash poolingSet up cash pooling.Joined the accounts of 14 subsidiaries in a daily cash pool; external borrowing fell and interest costs with it.
FX hedgingReduce currency and interest rate risk with forwards, swaps and options, within the policy and on record.Managed FX hedges.Introduced a rolling hedge programme for the four main currencies; the margin swings from exchange rates narrowed.
Treasury systemThe system that holds accounts, cash positions, deals and payments; set up, kept clean and used daily.Implemented a TMS.Led the introduction of a treasury management system for 60 bank accounts; manual payments dropped to a handful a month.
Bank relationshipsAgree fees, credit lines and terms with banks and lenders, with the facts on your side.Managed bank relationships.Reduced the banks from nine to five with a tender; fees fell by a quarter and every account now has two approvers.

Keep the company's balances, lines and deal terms out of your CV: say how large and what kind, not the figures.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the treasury manager jobs in our job search (treasury manager and analyst, treasurer, cash manager, liquidity manager and the German titles Liquiditätsmanager and Finanzdisponent), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a treasury manager do?
Manages a company's cash, bank accounts and payments, forecasts liquidity, arranges financing and hedges currency and interest rate risk.
How is treasury different from accounting?
Accounting records what happened; treasury manages the cash and risks of what is coming. The two agree every month on balances, loans and deals.
Do I need a bank background?
No. Many treasurers come from accounting, controlling or financial analysis; some come from banks and know the other side of the table.
Is a certificate needed?
No law asks for one. Some ads name the US CTP or a qualification of the ACT in the UK; cash, banks and hedges you handled count for more.
What should a treasury manager's CV show first?
The cash, banks, currencies and financing you handled, the systems you used, and what became more reliable or cheaper.
