What a platform engineer does

A platform engineer builds and runs the internal developer platform: the shared clusters, pipelines, templates, secrets, monitoring defaults and self-service tools that product teams use instead of building their own. The platform is treated as a product, with the developers as its customers: it has a roadmap, documentation and measures of whether teams choose to use it.

The role sits between two neighbours. DevOps engineers often do the same work inside one product team; their page is the DevOps engineer page. Site reliability engineers focus on keeping production within agreed targets; their page is the site reliability engineer page. Platform engineers build the shared ground both stand on, and the steps above the role are in the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

Where the jobs are, country by country

Each country below has its own figures: which cities have the most jobs in our list, whether the number is going up or down, how often ads offer remote or hybrid work, the titles used in the country, and pay ranges from published research, in the local currency.

Germany

14% of the ads offer hybrid work, and 25% are fully remote.

Pay (Base salary)

  • Entry level: €52,000 to €59,000 a year
  • Mid-level: €60,000 to €84,960 a year
  • Senior: €90,000 to €106,000 a year

Total pay: the German sources give base salary only, with no figures for bonuses.

No German source gives platform engineer figures from many salaries: both are estimates built from job ads and pay tables, so treat them as a guide. Entry level runs from the lower tenth of JobJump's range to its figure for the first two years; mid-level is the band brutto-netto-gehaltsrechner.de gives for three to five years; senior runs from JobJump's figure for experts to its figure for leads.

Sources: JobJump: platform engineer (2026), brutto-netto-gehaltsrechner.de: Plattform-Ingenieur (Aug 2026).

Pay researched on 28 Oct 2026.

Titles and language: German ads keep the English title Platform Engineer, sometimes Plattform Engineer or Plattformingenieur, and many ask for GermanAsked in 57% of platform engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Asked for in many ads in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where platform teams serve local product teams. next to EnglishAsked in 43% of platform engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).The working language of the tools, their communities and most platform teams across countries..

Security and staff rules: German public bodies and regulated companies often build to the BSI's IT-Grundschutz, the German federal security office's baseline. A German works council, the Betriebsrat, has a say before tools that could measure people's performance are introduced, which includes some developer metrics.

Government work: in the US, platforms that host systems for federal agencies need a FedRAMP authorisation, the US government's security programme for cloud services, which sets controls the platform must show.

How the work is offered: US ads mostly offer full-time employment, often with an on-call share for the platform; contract roles appear for migrations.

The platform as a product

The idea that holds the role together is that the platform is optional for its users in spirit, even when it is required on paper: if the golden path is slow or confusing, teams build around it. So platform teams measure adoption, the time a new service takes to reach production, and how much the platform takes off developers' minds, sometimes called cognitive load.

Developer portals such as Backstage, an open-source project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Port or Humanitec give teams one place for the service catalogue, templates and documentation; many platforms start with a wiki and a few templates instead. Rules still apply: in the EU, the Cyber Resilience Act and NIS2 raise the bar for software supply chains and security, and each country section below names its own.

Your CV for a platform engineer job

A platform CV is read twice: by hiring software that matches the ad's words, and by a lead engineer who wants to know what you built, how many teams use it, and what got faster or safer because of it. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the tools and ideas as the ad does: "Kubernetes", "Terraform", "GitOps", "internal developer platform", "golden path", "self-service". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Say how many teams and services use what you built, and how long a new service took before and after.
  • Write a certification or course you are working towards as "in progress" with the planned month, next to the platform work it covers.
  • Name the security and compliance controls the platform gives teams by default.

Prove each skill

A platform line proves itself with adoption and time: teams that chose it, services that moved, days that became minutes.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Golden pathBuilt templates.Built the golden path for new services with pipeline, monitoring and secrets set up; a new service reaches production on its first day.

TerraformAsked in 35% of platform engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Modules other teams reuse, state kept safe, versions pinned, and plans reviewed before they are applied. modulesWrote Terraform modules.Published versioned modules for databases and queues; teams now order them through a merge request instead of a ticket.
GitOpsIntroduced GitOps.Moved deployments of 120 services to GitOps with Argo CD; drift between clusters and the repository is gone.
Developer portalSet up a portal.Launched a service catalogue with owners and docs for every service; on-call finds the right team in seconds.

Write only what you built or changed yourself. If a team did it, say which part was yours: the module, the template, the design, the migration.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the platform engineer jobs in our job search (platform engineer, platform engineering and the German titles), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a platform engineer do?
Builds and runs the internal platform product teams use to create, ship and run services: clusters, pipelines, templates, secrets and self-service tools.
How is platform engineering different from DevOps?
DevOps is a way of working across building and running software; platform engineering builds a shared product so every team gets that way of working without building it alone.
And from SRE?
SREs keep production within agreed targets; platform engineers build the ground services run on. Many teams do both, and the two roles work closely.
Do I need a certification?
No law asks for one. Some ads name a Kubernetes or cloud certificate; most ask for platforms you built and teams that use them.
What should a platform CV show first?
What you built, how many teams use it, and how much faster or safer it made their work.
