What a test engineer does

A test engineer finds out whether software does what people need, and where it could fail. The work is part detective, part engineer: reading what a feature should do, deciding what could go wrong, testing the most important risks first, and writing clear bug reports. Most test engineers today also build automated checks that run every time the code changes.

Job titles vary: Test Engineer, QA Engineer (QA means quality assurance), Software Tester, Test Automation Engineer, SDET (a developer who builds test tools). We count them as one role. The ladder goes up to test lead, test manager and head of QA, which have their own section in the career paths.

The skills the ads ask for

We read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills they name. On a computer, hover a skill in the text to see its share; on a phone, the table has the same figures.

SkillShare of adsWhat is expected
Software testing43%Test design: equivalence classes, boundary values, state changes and exploratory sessions. The core of the job at every level.
Test Automation34%Automated checks that run on every change, are fast, stable and easy to read, and that the team trusts.
Selenium11%Browser automation with Selenium, Cypress or Playwright: stable locators, waits done right, and tests that do not flake.
CI/CD17%Tests run on every change in the pipeline; a failed check stops the release and the team sees why at once.
Agile10%Testing inside the sprint, not after it: refine stories, agree acceptance criteria, test as code lands.
Python33%Scripting test data, API checks and small tools; pytest for test suites. Readable code, reviewed like product code.
Java8%Common in enterprise test automation (JUnit, TestNG, Selenium, REST Assured). Clean, maintainable test code.
Jira18%Write clear bug reports and link them to stories and test cases; read a board to see what is at risk.

REST APIs0%Test APIs directly: status codes, contracts, error cases, authorisation, and the data a call leaves behind.
JavaScript2%Needed for Cypress and Playwright tests and for reading the front-end code you test.
TypeScript3%The usual language for Playwright suites in newer web teams; typed page objects and test helpers.
Unit Testing7%Read and write unit tests (JUnit, pytest), and know which risks they cover so higher tests do not repeat them.
Git20%Branches, pull requests and reviews; test code lives in version control like product code.
Docker2%Start the app and its database in containers so every test run starts from the same clean state.
Scrum12%Know the ceremonies and where a tester adds most: refinement, the definition of done, the review.
English68%The working language of most test teams and tools; bug reports and test plans are often written in it.

Shares of the test engineer ads we read in the last 7 days, as of 5 Nov 2026. Our ads, not the whole market.

Three things stand out. First, the ads still ask for software testingAsked in 43% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Test design: equivalence classes, boundary values, state changes and exploratory sessions. The core of the job at every level. itself: test design, exploratory testing, good bug reports. Tools do not replace that. Second, test automationAsked in 34% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Automated checks that run on every change, are fast, stable and easy to read, and that the team trusts. is now expected in most jobs, usually with Selenium, Cypress or PlaywrightAsked in 11% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Browser automation with Selenium, Cypress or Playwright: stable locators, waits done right, and tests that do not flake. for the browser and a language such as PythonAsked in 33% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Scripting test data, API checks and small tools; pytest for test suites. (tests that run on every change), JiraAsked in 18% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Write clear bug reports and link them to stories and test cases; read a board to see what is at risk., AgileAsked in 10% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Testing inside the sprint, not after it: refine stories, agree acceptance criteria, test as code lands. ways of working, and SQLAsked in 5% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Check what a test left in the database, build test data, and find the record behind a bug report. to check the data.

API testing (REST APIsAsked in 0% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Test APIs directly: status codes, contracts, error cases, authorisation, and the data a call leaves behind.) is asked for more and more, because API checks are faster and more stable than tests through the browser.

Your CV for a test engineer job

A test engineer CV is read by two readers: the hiring software, which looks for the words of the ad, and a test lead, who looks for proof that you find real problems and make testing faster. Write for both.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Name the skills the way the ad names them: "test automation", "Playwright", "API testing", "CI/CD". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Put the core skills in a short line near the top: test designAsked in 43% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Test design: equivalence classes, boundary values, state changes and exploratory sessions. The core of the job at every level., test automationAsked in 34% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Automated checks that run on every change, are fast, stable and easy to read, and that the team trusts., your browser tool (Selenium, Cypress or PlaywrightAsked in 11% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Browser automation with Selenium, Cypress or Playwright: stable locators, waits done right, and tests that do not flake.), your language (PythonAsked in 33% of test engineer ads (as of 5 Nov 2026).Scripting test data, API checks and small tools; pytest for test suites. • Name the ISTQB certificate if you have it; many ads in Europe ask for it.
  • Only list what you can talk about for ten minutes. Every word on the CV is a question in the interview.

Prove each skill

A skill in a list proves nothing. A line under a job proves it: what you tested or built, how big it was, and one result, such as bugs caught before release, a faster test run, fewer flaky tests or fewer problems reported by customers.

SkillWeak lineStrong line, with proof
Test automationExperience with test automation.Built a Playwright suite of 400 checks for the checkout; regression testing fell from 3 days to 2 hours.
CI/CDWorked with CI/CD.Put the API and UI checks into the GitLab pipeline; every merge request is tested in 12 minutes.
Test designWrote test cases.Designed risk-based tests for the payment flow; found 14 critical bugs before go-live, none after.
API testingAPI testing with Postman.Replaced 120 slow UI tests with API checks; the suite runs 6 times faster and has not flaked in 3 months.
Flaky testsImproved test stability.Cut flaky test failures from about one run in five to one in fifty by fixing waits and test data.

Never claim what you did not do. A side project is fine: say it is one, link the code, and describe its results the same way.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the test engineer jobs in our job search (QA engineer, software tester, test engineer and similar titles), matched the same way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: we read a sample of the ads every day and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. We keep only the counts, never the ad text.
  • Pay: from published salary research, with each source and its date, as a range from entry level to senior. It is not worked out from our ads.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day, and shows the day it was worked out.

Frequently asked questions

What does a test engineer do?
Finds the risks in software before customers do: decides what to test, tests the most important things first, writes clear bug reports, and builds automated checks that run on every change.
Is a test engineer the same as a QA engineer?
In software, mostly yes. QA engineer, test engineer and software tester ads ask for much the same skills. SDET roles lean more towards writing test code and tools.
Which skills matter most?
Test design and test automation lead, with a browser tool such as Selenium, Cypress or Playwright, a language such as Python, Java or TypeScript, API testing, CI/CD and SQL.
Do I need the ISTQB certificate?
It helps in Europe, where many ads name it, especially in banks, insurers and large companies. Proof of real testing work on your CV counts for more.
What should a test engineer CV show first?
Two or three results: bugs caught before release, a faster or more stable test suite, tests added to the pipeline. Then a short skills line in the words of the ads.
