What a relationship manager does

A relationship manager in a bank, a Kundenberater Private Banking or a private banker in some ads, is the main contact for a group of clients: wealthy individuals and families in private banking and wealth management, or companies in corporate banking. The relationship manager learns each client's goals and situation, brings in the bank's specialists for investments, loans, payments or planning, makes sure the advice suits the client and is documented, keeps the client's file up to date for the bank's checks, and wins new clients, mostly through referrals.

Several titles share the words and are other work. Sales account managers and key account managers sell a company's products and are on the sales manager page; branch advisers, such as a Bankkaufmann serving everyday customers at a counter, and customer relationship managers who run email and loyalty marketing are not covered here. The portfolio manager invests the money of the clients who choose a mandate; the credit analyst decides on their loans; the compliance officer sets and checks the rules the relationship manager follows. The steps from assistant relationship manager to head of relationship management are in the career paths of this role.

Supervisors and adviser licences differ by country, and each country's section names its own. This page describes the work of relationship managers; it is not financial, legal or career advice, and it gives no view on any investment or product.

Supervision: in India, banks are regulated by the RBI and investment advice and products by SEBI; relationship managers who distribute mutual funds hold the NISM certificate for it, and SEBI-registered investment advisers hold NISM's adviser certificates.

The rules on advice are named side by side, each with its place. In the EU, MiFID II asks for a suitability check before investment advice and for advisers with proven knowledge; in Germany that knowledge is the German Sachkunde, and advisers are reported to BaFin. In the US, FINRA registers representatives and sets suitability rules; the UK FCA certifies advisers through their firms; the Swiss FIDLEG sets rules of conduct and a client adviser register; and SEBI regulates investment advice in India. The bank's compliance team says how each applies to a client.

One client year, step by step

  1. Know: the client's goals, situation, risk profile and source of wealth, documented and checked.
  2. Advise: with the specialists, proposals that suit the client, with risks and costs explained.
  3. Serve: loans, payments and requests handled quickly, with the right colleagues involved.
  4. Review: the portfolio and the client's situation at least once a year, and the file updated.
  5. Grow: new clients through referrals and networks, within the bank's rules.

The hardest moments are often a client's request that does not fit the rules or their own interest, where saying no politely and explaining why keeps the relationship for years.

Your CV for a relationship manager job

A relationship manager's CV is screened by software for the ad's words, then read by a team head who wants to know which clients you looked after, how many relationships of which size, what grew and how clean your files were. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.

Use the keywords the ads use

  • Write the work as the ads do: "relationship management", "private banking", "wealth management", "corporate clients", "client acquisition", "KYC". The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
  • Name the client segment and markets: affluent, high net worth, mid-sized companies, international clients.
  • Show growth and quality: new clients won, assets or lending grown, reviews and files up to date.
  • An adviser exam or a planning qualification still under way goes on the CV as in progress, with the planned date.

Prove each skill

A relationship line proves itself with the client segment, what you did and what changed.

How we read our data

  • The jobs: the relationship manager jobs in our job search (relationship managers, private bankers, wealth managers, client advisors in private banking and the German titles Kundenberater Private Banking and Vermögensberater), matched by their titles the way the search matches them; sales account managers and customer relationship managers are counted on their own pages. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
  • The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
  • Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
  • Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
