What an enterprise architect does
An enterprise architect, in German an Enterprise Architect or Unternehmensarchitekt, looks after the whole: which business capabilities the company has, which applications and data support each, where the same thing is done three times, and what the landscape should look like in three to five years. From that comes a roadmap of changes, the principles and standards projects follow, and advice on the big decisions: a new ERP, a merger, a move to the cloud.
The role sits above single projects. The solutions architect designs one solution and the software architect the inside of one application; the enterprise architect makes sure all of them add up. Many come from those roles or from consulting as an IT consultant, and they work closely with the engineering manager and the leaders of the business units. The steps from domain architect to chief enterprise architect are in the career paths of this role.
In banks, insurers and public bodies the landscape is also read by supervisors, whose rules differ by country; each country's section names its own. This page describes the work; it is not legal advice.

From strategy to roadmap, step by step
- Map: the capabilities of the business and the applications, data and technology behind each.
- Assess: what is duplicated, ageing, risky or expensive, and what the strategy needs that is missing.
- Target: the landscape in three to five years, with principles that explain it.
- Roadmap: the steps from today to the target, each with a business case and an owner.
- Steer: review the projects against the target, update the map, and change the target when the strategy changes.
The hard part is not the drawing but the agreement: a roadmap that the business units fund and follow. A good enterprise architect is trusted because the map is current and the advice saves money or risk that people can see.
Your CV for an enterprise architect job
An enterprise architect's CV is read first by hiring software that looks for the ad's words, then by a chief architect or CIO who wants to see what landscape you changed and how you got the business to follow. Give both: the keywords and the evidence.
Use the keywords the ads use
- Write the practice as the ads write it: "enterprise architecture", "capability map", "target architecture", "roadmap", "application portfolio", and the frameworks and tools you used. The skills table above shows which keywords the ads use most.
- Say the size of the landscape in words a reader can picture: business units, countries, a merger, an ERP.
- Show results the board saw: systems retired, costs cut, risks removed, a strategy delivered.
- List a framework course or exam you have not finished as in progress, with the level you are aiming at.
Prove each skill
An enterprise architecture line proves itself with a decision the business took and what it changed.
| Skill | Weak line | Strong line, with proof |
|---|---|---|
| Capability mapPlan the whole landscape of systems, data and processes against the strategy of the business. | Created capability maps. | Built the group's capability map with eight business units; it became the basis of the yearly IT budget. |
| PortfolioKeep an architecture repository current enough that people trust what it shows. | Managed the application portfolio. | Led the review of three hundred applications; forty were retired within two years. |
| Target architectureUse TOGAF's method and vocabulary where they help, and leave out what the company does not need. | Defined the target architecture. | Wrote the target architecture and roadmap for the move to one ERP across four countries. |
| BoardWin executives, business owners and IT leads for one roadmap that they fund and follow. | Ran the architecture board. | Set up an architecture board that answered projects within two weeks instead of two months. |
| RegulationWeigh technology risk, from ageing systems to suppliers, in the roadmap's choices. | Supported compliance. | Mapped the systems behind each important business service for the resilience review; the supervisor raised no finding. |
Keep confidential details out: no internal strategy, deal names or system weaknesses.
How we read our data
- The jobs: the enterprise architect jobs in our job search (enterprise architects, enterprise architecture roles, TOGAF architects and the German title Unternehmensarchitekt), matched by their titles the way the search matches them. Our list is not the whole market, so we give shares and rankings, never counts.
- The skills: every day we read a sample of these ads and count the skills in them with a fixed word list. Only the counts are kept, never the text of an ad.
- Pay: from published salary research, each source named with its date, as a range from entry level to senior. Our ads are not used for it.
- Dates: every figure is worked out again each day and shows the day it was worked out.
Frequently asked questions
- What does an enterprise architect do?
- Maps the company's capabilities and systems, sets the target landscape and the roadmap to it, and steers projects towards it.
- How is it different from a solutions architect?
- A solutions architect designs one solution; an enterprise architect plans how all of them fit the strategy of the company.
- Do I need TOGAF?
- Many ads name it and many architects use parts of it; no framework is asked for in every ad, and a roadmap you delivered says more.
- How do people become enterprise architects?
- Usually after years as a solution, software, data or domain architect, or as a senior IT consultant.
- What should an enterprise architect's CV show first?
- The landscape you changed, the roadmap you set and the decisions the business took on your advice.
